Mercury Marine has had good success using Thermbond castables and gun mixes in their furnace maintenance. Mercury melting operations need to keep up with production and this means that they are near furnace capacity to do so. The typical repair is done over a Friday through Monday outage. Mercury drains the furnace on Friday and allows it to cool down and the contractor gets into the furnace late Saturday or early Sunday. Thermbond Formula 5AG has been used for the last three belly band repairs. The furnace is holding liquid metal on Monday. Mercury Marine considers Thermbond to be resistant to oxide build up and “goof proof” for a quick heat up.
